Department of History was opened in the year 2005 under Gauhati University with three guest faculties initially and later recruited another guest faculty. It was run by the guest faculties till the appointment of a permanent faculty in the year 2008. Moreover, it was run by one permanent faculty with the help of young and energetic guest faculties till the appointment of permanent ones in the month of September, 2012 under Bodoland University. In spite of many obstacles ranging from faculties to library facilities and other infrastructures the Department of History by dint of hard work, has produced several master degree holder students since the time of its inception some of whom are absorbed in different colleges and other sectors. In fact, the Department of History, Bodoland University attempts to provide a good knowledge in writing and rewriting of History of the downtrodden communities whose Histories are ignored. It attempts to produce qualitative scholars in History who will help the human civilization through their research works. One of the most important objectives of the Department is to preserve the oral tradition of the Bodo community and other tribal people because unless it is preserved it may be swiped away with emergence of globalization.
